Dark academia is the look of old libraries, autumn lectures and long walks between stone buildings: deep colours, wool, white collars and one long coat that holds the whole outfit together. This guide shows how to build dark academia outfits around a long wool coat – what to wear underneath, which colours work and how to choose between a fitted coat and a cloak. Everything below is designed by Camilla and sewn in our atelier in Poland.

IThe basics

Five pieces of a dark academia outfit

You don't need a whole new wardrobe. Five pieces – and a few colours that work together – are enough for most autumn and winter days.

01 · The coat

One long coat

The coat is the outfit. A long, fitted wool coat with a flared skirt reads polished over a dress and softer over trousers; a hooded cloak feels more romantic and layers over anything. Choose one in a deep colour and let everything else stay quiet.

02 · The dress

A wool dress

A black merino dress is the easiest base: midi for a classic, slightly stern line, mini with tights for a younger take. Long sleeves and a defined waist look right under a long coat and don't bunch up.

03 · Tailoring

Waistcoat and trousers

A tailored waistcoat with matching trousers is the other classic: very "old university", comfortable for a whole day and easy to dress up. Houndstooth or herringbone wool adds texture without adding colour.

04 · The collar

White blouse or collar

A white blouse or a white collar is what makes dark colours look dark academia rather than simply dark. It lights up your face and shows at the neckline of the coat, even when it's buttoned.

05 · Colour

Deep, quiet colours

Emerald or bottle green, burgundy, black, camel and grey – with ivory or white as the only light colour. Pick one strong colour for the coat; keep the dress or trousers in black, beige or grey.

IIThe coat

The long coat: fitted coat or hooded cloak?

Both work for dark academia. A fitted coat is more tailored and city-ready; a cloak is looser and more romantic. Here is how ours differ – or see all our wool coats for women with a hood.

Our fitted long coat

Arwen – hooded wool coat with a flared skirt

Arwen is fitted at the waist and flares out below it like a dress, so it looks finished over a midi dress as well as over trousers. The large hood gives it a romantic, slightly elven character; the buttons are hand-covered with the same wool as the coat.

IIIUnderneath

What to wear under a long coat

Under a fitted coat, choose layers that are warm but not bulky. Three combinations that always work:

  1. 1
A black merino dress. Eowyn (€440) has a full-circle skirt, cotton lace at the neck and cuffs and gold metal buttons. Charlotte (€285) is a mini with a detachable white collar – dark academia with it, a little black dress without.
  2. 2
Waistcoat, trousers, white blouse. The Frodo waistcoat (€190) and trousers (€195) in beige houndstooth merino wool look best under a green or burgundy coat.
  3. 3
An ivory dress for a winter wedding. A long coat over a light dress looks intentional – see what to wear to a courthouse wedding as a bride.
IVSize & timing

Choosing your size – and when to order

Most of our coats are made for you after you order. Here's what happens next.

  1. I

    You measure and order

Arwen and Roma are fitted and the wool doesn't stretch – measure your bust and waist. Ithil comes in combined sizes with a loose fit.

  2. II

    We sew it

Pieces in stock leave within 24 hours. Others are cut and sewn for you in our atelier in Poland in 4–10 working days – coats usually in about 7.

  3. III

    It travels

EU delivery usually takes 3–5 working days and is free from €170. Orders to the UK and the US ship with duties included in the price.

  4. IV

    You try it on

You have 14 days to return it. If you need another size, we cover the shipping of the new size for your first exchange.

VQuestions

Dark academia outfits: questions & answers

Can't find your question? Write to me – I'll help you choose.

What is a dark academia outfit?

A classic, slightly scholarly look in deep colours: a long wool coat, a wool dress or a tailored waistcoat with trousers, a white blouse or collar – in dark green, burgundy, black, camel or grey.

What should I wear under a long coat?

A long-sleeved wool dress (midi or mini), or a blouse with a waistcoat and trousers. Under a fitted coat, choose thinner layers; under a cloak, even a chunky jumper fits.

Coat or cloak – which is better for dark academia?

Both. Arwen is fitted with a flared skirt and buttons, Roma is a wrap coat without buttons, Ithil is a loose hooded cloak with a metal clasp. Choose a coat for a tailored look and a cloak for a more romantic one.

How do I choose the right coat size?

Measure your bust and waist and compare them with the size chart. Arwen and Roma don't stretch – if you're between two sizes, take the larger one. Ithil comes in XS–S, M–L and XL–XXL.

What are the coats made of?

Arwen and Roma: 100% wool produced in Poland, 660 g/m, with a viscose lining. Ithil: 82% wool and 18% polyamide, 560 g/m, with a viscose lining.

How long does it take to receive my coat?

In stock: dispatched within 24 hours. Made to order: 4–10 working days of sewing (coats usually about 7), plus delivery – usually 3–5 working days within the EU.

Do you ship to the UK and the US?

Yes. Prices for the UK and the US already include duties and taxes, so there's nothing extra to pay on delivery.
